What About Healing Stones and Crystals?

stonesTherapeutic stones and crystals form in the earth. Each carries its own vibration. They have been valued for their healing properties for as long as recorded history and have been used for every ailment and condition. In her book The Crystal Bible, Judy Hall says, “Crystals heal holistically. That is to say, they work on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. They realign subtle energies and dissolve dis-ease, getting to the root cause.”

In my nearly three decades of delving into the healing properties of crystals and gemstones, I’ve come across people who believe it just can’t be so. How can a little inanimate object be used for healing?! What hogwash and nonsense! How can you, an educated person, take yourself seriously? But… are they inanimate objects? Are their properties felt by people sensitive enough to detect energy?

Stones and crystals have their own life force and can help shift energies within and around you. I’ve been using them for nearly 30 years and have witnessed the shift they create in others. I’ve felt it in myself and in my surroundings over and over again.

With the wide variety of healing stones and crystals to choose from, any imbalance or situation can be assisted with their use. Two years ago when my beloved 16-year-old cat Calypso died, I buried him with a piece of rose quartz to strengthen the vibration of love around his body. When clients want to access their intuition, I surround them in amethyst. When I’m working with someone who needs to become grounded and centered, I use heavy black stones like hematite or dark smoky quartz.

In my book The Holistic Approach to Breast Cancer, I added a short paragraph about stones. It’s not very “medical” or officially sanctioned, but as a holistic healer, I can’t ignore their usefulness even for serious ailments. For example, in the case of breast cancer, I’d begin with clear quartz and black tourmaline to clear old energy, and use my intuitive guidance to proceed from there. I would also consider rose quartz to help heal heart chakra issues, which helps heal old pain that might be a factor in the body’s dis-ease.

If you want to experiment with healing stones and crystals, you can first hold the stone in your hands while visualizing the outcome you desire. Then place the stone on the skin over the area of illness or imbalance, or in an area of your home or office where you want to make a shift. As I write this, I have several stones in front of me. Black tourmaline to absorb the EMFs from this computer, quartz crystal to raise the vibration, Connemara marble from Ireland (to keep the faeries happy), and a botswana agate, known for its ability to help one keep focused, organized, and pay attention to detail.

Many stones need to be cleared after being used for illness or after sitting around awhile. (Use your intuition to decide when its time to clear them. Once you’ve used the stones for a while, they’ll tell you if they need clearing.) Most can be cleared under running water, but some, such as Hematite, can absorb water so they are best cleared in moonlight or by being buried in the earth for a day or so.

Also in my book The Holistic Approach to Breast Cancer (which is an excellent resource for holistic healing in general) there is a Resources section with “Books of Interest” for recommendations on how you can learn more about healing with stones and crystals, but if you’re a beginner, I’d start with The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall. Enjoy!

The Human Energy Field: Creating Harmonious Flow for Your Body, Mind, & Spirit

energy field interactionScientists are learning more about the subtle energy bodies that move within and around all living things. These energetic bodies or “energy fields” contain information about disharmony in your body, mind, and spirit, also known as dis-ease.

Your unique energy field responds to everything around you including your emotions (and often the emotions of others), environmental pollution, people (and their energy fields), noise, thoughts, and food. If there are imbalances in your body, they can be detected in your energy field before a medical device is able to detect them. Even cancer has its beginning in the energy field before it can be seen on an MRI or X-ray.

A weakness in your energy field can cause your mind to be vulnerable to confusion, your emotions to be unsteady, and your body can be more vulnerable to disease. When I’m working with someone with unsteady emotions, for example, I look at the energy field to see what it’s saying, where energy looks dark or stuck. (And yes, your energy field says a lot. It’s full of messages.)

Ideally, energy flows easily through the body and energy field. When it doesn’t, it’s as if the energy is blocked or stagnant. Areas of stagnation can be thought of like a river whose flow is blocked by old twigs, logs, debris, and garbage. Where the river has less flowing water, slime and muck accumulate. If the river becomes quite stagnant, unhealthy organisms grow. If debris continues to pile up, the river’s natural path has to change. Similarly, the flowing energy pathways through your body can get altered when there is stagnation.

Many subtle energy therapies create a healthy flow again, supporting your body and mind and their ability to balance and heal. Did you know “energy work” can be done at a distance? You don’t have to be in the same room being touched or “operated on” by a healer. For more information about this, see my web page. I’ve worked with thousands of people, bringing body, mind, and spirit into harmonious flow through “energy work:” creating a harmonious flow through the human energy field. If you haven’t tried it, contact me. You’ll be glad you did!

What are Subtle Energies?

subtle energiesThrough science we know that everything is comprised of energy, from the chair you sit on to your own body. When the layers of all physical matter are broken down in minute detail, we find microscopic vibrating particles and space. “Subtle Energy” is associated with this deeper, more refined layer of matter. And “subtle” though it may be, it is hypothesized to be the basis from which all life is sprung. This is also why you might hear it said there is “life” or “energy” in everything around us.

The discoveries that have led scientists into the subtle energy realm have created a branch of physics called Quantum Physics. This is the branch of physics based on quantum theory. Quantum refers to “how much.” It deals with the atomic and subatomic levels. It provides more precise descriptions for phenomena that classical physics can’t explain on the atomic level.

Out of quantum physics has come subtle energy research proving the existence of subtle energy bodies that move within and around all living things. Healers have worked with these subtle energy bodies for thousands of years and clairvoyants are capable of seeing them. Subtle energy therapies have been used for centuries to bring a person’s subtle energies into balance. It has been demonstrated over time that this contributes to deep healing, often getting to the root cause of disease and healing at its source. This is why subtle energy healing, sometimes called “energy medicine,” is worth exploring.

Today in our era of modern science, proof that something is real and valid is expected. Many people want to see the evidence of a theory from studies conducted with rigorous controls and practicality before they consider it valid. While science continues to explore the implication of subtle energies on our world, our lives, and our health, what’s most relevant is that subtle energy therapies are being used successfully and they can work for you.

Use the Earth to Energize Your Body, Mind, & Spirit

on the earthThe earth offers us food, clothing, and shelter, but also offers healing energy to energize and balance us. “Healing energy” from the earth might sound odd, but when we connect deeply with the earth and either imagine, sense, or hold the intention to fill ourselves up with its energy and light, a natural balancing occurs. Anxiety fades, depression lifts, worries and struggles soften, and it’s easier to approach others with more love and compassion. For these benefits and more, see how often you can get your feet on the earth and use its energy to harmonize you.

In Reiki, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi, energy is drawn from the earth, but you don’t have to learn those forms unless you want to. You can do simple processes. It’s important to begin by connecting with the earth. One of the biggest maladies of our modern era is that people are not connected to the earth. This is associated with addictions, fears, and mental and emotional distortions of all sorts. Especially now when we are inundated with technology to further disconnect us, it’s wise to be aware of the life and essence of the planet beneath your feet.

In my work with clients, the first thing I do is connect people to the earth. I do this visually, which is highly effective. You can do it yourself by standing tall on the earth (barefoot is best) and imagine roots extending from your feet, anchoring you deep into the earth. Be perceptive of the energy in the earth beneath you. We have a living, breathing, powerful life force beneath us, yet who takes note? This simple practice is powerful enough to drain away excess emotions, soothing chaos and frazzled nerves.

Another way to connect is to imagine dropping an anchor of light from the base of your spine into the center of the earth. Then, bring bright light up from the earth into your body. Alternatively, sit on the ground, “drop anchor,” and absorb positive earth energy upward into your body. How do you bring light into your body or absorb positive earth energy? Imagine it, intend it, sense it, feel it. In doing so, you’re making it happen.

Chakra Health: Your Personal Wheels of Light

chaIn Sanskrit, chakra translates to “wheel of light.” The body has many chakras, but seven of these wheels of light are traditionally used for healing. The first chakra is located at the base of your spine while the seventh chakra is at the crown of your head. Each chakra has a role and point of view. In her book Wheels of Light, Rosalyn Bruyere says, “Each of the seven traditional chakras has a physical, an emotional, a creative, and a celestial component. Besides these, each chakra has its own purpose or particular viewpoint based upon the area of consciousness it influences.”

The chakras are swirling vortices, “energy centers” that connect with your internal organs and endocrine system. They affect your physical, mental, and emotional state, reacting to every thought, word, feeling, choice, and action. These energy centers respond to exercise, the food you eat, sunlight, the way you allow yourself to be treated by others, your thoughts and feelings about your relationship with the outer world, and they respond to chaos and confusion or peace and calm.

Dr. Valerie Hunt and Rosalyn Bruyere conducted studies at UCLA and found that the human electromagnetic energy field is generated by the chakras. Bruyere says, “Our research at UCLA was significant on more than one level. It was perhaps the first attempt made in our country to examine an electrical manifestation, a magnetic field phenomenon, as connected to the healing process.” She also says, “Health is generally defined as absence of disease, but this is really an unsatisfactory definition. The word ‘health’ means ‘wholeness.’ Health implies much more than freedom from disease. A complete definition of health must include vitality, appropriate feelings, clear thinking and reasoning, and a willingness to embrace change.”

In addressing “wholeness,” in striving for health and embracing change, the energy field and chakras are important. There is a flow of energy through the chakras in your body that has a natural balance. But when the body isn’t well, or when the emotions, mental state, or spiritual state are compromised, the complementary role of each chakra is also compromised. To try to heal yourself without addressing your chakras would be like trying to swim in oil. You might be able to look as if you’re doing it, but you’re actually bogged down and covered in muck.

The healthy flow of the chakras can be enhanced through what is commonly known as “chakra balancing.” Many healers specialize in the chakra system. When I see people in person, I always balance the chakras and energy field. One way you can help keep your chakras balanced is to leave your tech devices behind and go outside to sit on the earth. Connect with nature and allow yourself to be brought into balance. Breathe into your heart center. Soften your lower belly. Take a deep breath and sound out “AAAHHHHH…..” until you have no more breath. Listen to your higher guidance. Trust your intuition. You’ll be amazed at how much more centered and balanced you’ll feel.

Revitalize Your Body with Gua Sha

guaGua Sha means “to extract toxins” and has been used in China for over 2,000 years to alleviate stiffness and pain, bring back mobility and circulation, heal digestive disorders, release toxins and stagnant energy, and generally revitalize the body. It is also known to treat tumors and cysts. Most acupuncturists are trained to use this technique.

During a Gua Sha treatment, strokes are made over your skin with a smooth-edged tool such as polished jade, although an item as simple as a lid from a jar can be used. Gua Sha is done in areas of congestion, tightness, tension, or discomfort on your neck, shoulders, and back, but sometimes on your chest and abdomen. Blood gets released from peripheral capillaries while fluid under your skin is pushed, creating space. Toxic fluid from deep in the tissue rises to the skin’s surface into the space. This causes the skin to turn red or take on the coloration of bruising. It is not bruising though, and clears up in a couple of days. It is actually a welcome sight to see this “Sha” coming to the surface of the skin, because it indicates the release of old, trapped energy. The color of bruising is a sign of healing.

Gua Sha is not painful. Instead there is a sense of relief as the stagnant energy is freed. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the freed energy is also called qi, pronounced “chee” in China. Stagnant qi is associated with pain and areas of oxygen deprivation. In the case of breast disease, Gua Sha is a way to increase oxygen in your tissue while moving stagnant energy and releasing toxins. It is believed that exposing the Sha — indicated by the discoloration that occurs — removes disease from deep within the body.

If you’re in pain, or have recently had surgery or other traumas that have areas of stagnation around them, ask your acupuncturist to “gua sha” you. You’ll be glad you did!

Self-Healing with Energy

lightThe earth offers us food, clothing, and shelter, and it also offers healing energy. The idea of drawing healing energy from the earth might sound odd, but when we connect deeply with the earth and either imagine, sense, or hold the intention to fill ourselves up with its energy and light, a natural balancing occurs within us. We become more serene physically, mentally, and emotionally.

One method you can use is to stand tall and imagine roots extending from your feet, anchoring you deep into the earth. A more powerful and healing way to do this is to stand barefoot on the ground. Feel the bottoms of your feet connecting to the living planet beneath you.

Another way is to imagine dropping an anchor of light into the center of the earth extending down from the base of your spine. Then, imagine drawing bright light energy up from the earth into your body. Alternatively, sit on the ground, “drop anchor,” and absorb earth energy upward into your body.

Just as you can pull energy up from the earth, you can also pour light into yourself from above. Simply visualize light pouring into you. It can be golden, blue, green, silver, or whatever color you imagine. See or sense it as energized, refined, and uplifting, filling your entire body.

These practices can be used by anyone regardless of their beliefs. Whatever your image is of God, the universal awareness, or even if you don’t consider yourself to be spiritually connected at all, you can use light and energy from the earth to heal and balance you on many levels.

6 Steps to Clear the Energy of Your Home or Office

Arguments, illness, drug-use, moods, and negative thoughts influence the energy of a place. Sometimes I go to Sunday open houses to satisfy my curiosity about what type of home is selling for what price. Each tells something about its dwellers. In some homes it’s hard to breathe. In others, I want to turn around and get out fast. But in some, where there has been love and care, the energy feels great – like I’d want to stay awhile.

Clearing a space resets the energy. Just as you would clean dirty floors before moving in, it’s important to clear the space. Otherwise, you’re living or working in someone else’s energetic dirt, which can deplete you.

I once toured a famous historic home near Boston. We were told about the home’s original owners – people there when the first “shot heard ‘round the world” occurred. It was a home I had trouble breathing in, which was my first sign the energy was stagnant. When we entered an upstairs bedroom, I could feel and smell illness. I said, “Someone had a long illness here… probably died here.” The tour guide and the others turned to look at me as if I’d grown a second head! The guide confirmed that an older woman had died there. I could feel that part of the woman was still hanging around, 200 years later! It was not only unpleasant, but who would want to step into that energy, not to mention live there?

Other people leave energy behind where it clings to walls, drapes, furniture, carpets, and air. In Feng Shui, we’re advised to know the history of a home and its inhabitants before moving in. If someone was ill, financially unsound, or if their relationships were poor, it’s not good to step into that energy because the same theme can start operating in your life. I’m so aware of this, I can’t bring myself to buy antiques unless I know exactly where they came from! This comes from working with and sensing energy for so many years and seeing what an impact it makes.

Bottom line, clear any home or building as a rule, whether you know about the previous tenants or not. Here are 6 effective ways to do this.

1. Bring in as much natural light as possible. Darkness lends itself to stagnant energy.

2. Clean thoroughly. Wipe down walls, shelves, and cabinets. Shampoo carpets and floors.

3. Let fresh air blow through each and every room. This helps removes stagnant air and whatever lingers in it.

4. Use white sage. My go-to energy clearing tool is white sage, wrapped into a tight bundle (sometimes called a smudge stick or sage wand). Open doors, windows, cabinets, showers, drawers, and closets. Light the tips of the sage with a match and extinguish the flame so the wand lightly smokes. Walk counterclockwise around the space with the smoldering sage, getting the smoke into every nook and cranny.

5. Tune in and feel. Is it lightening up? Is dense energy being released? Do you need to go round again? I usually go 3 times around, sensing the energy along the way. Knowing when energy is clear might not be easy at first, but after awhile you’ll be able to feel it.

6. After saging, use sounds, Tibetan bells, music that lifts your spirit, chanting, singing, living plants, fresh flowers, or crystals to reset the energy to your own positive desires for the space. Repeat when needed, or as soon as you get the sense that your positive vibe needs a lift.

Happy Clearing!

Renew Yourself in 20 Minutes with a Salt Bath

girl in bathYou can clear your mind, relax your muscles, de-stress, press your personal reset button, and emerge renewed by soaking for 20 minutes in a salt bath. The tightness in your neck and shoulders will dissolve away, you’ll have a cleaner aura, and you’ll get the added benefit of clearing toxins from your body as the salt water draws toxins out of your skin.

You can add baking soda and lavender essential oil if you want to increase the detoxifying and relaxation benefits of your bath. Sometimes I even pour in a little apple cider vinegar, which helps to restore the skin’s pH balance.

Immersing your body into saltwater is an easy way to cleanse your energy field while reducing muscle tension. It’s particularly helpful when you feel overwhelmed, hurt by something that happened during the day, your mind is busy, or if you feel out of sorts. The bath is truly holistic, relieving physical, mental, and emotional stress.

Some people like to rinse off in the shower after the bath to remove salt residue, but whether you rinse afterward or not, don’t stay in the bath longer than 20 minutes, as this is when you will start reabsorbing the toxins that your body has just released into the water.

Recipe for Salt Bath

1 cup to ½ box Epsom salts
Very warm water in a clean tub
Use a bath ball to filter your bathwater so you don’t soak in chlorine (google “bath ball faucet filter”)

Optional:

1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 handful sea salt
8-10 drops essential oil such as lavender (or rosemary if you’re mentally fatigued)
1 handful baking soda

Remain in the tub for 20 minutes. Don’t reuse the water.

Afterward, be sure to drink plenty of extra water to re-hydrate.
